Do a quick Google search for “robbery tech” or if you’re feeling risky “how to steal a car.” The results may surprise you. There is an increase in the number of sophisticated tools, techniques, and tech that make breaking into a car or house incredibly easy.
And if you are still banking on a simple house lock, forget it. A child can and has cracked those in seconds. Security is evolving and you have to keep up.
Of course, there are almost as many posts giving tech high solutions to each of these from security robots that will do the rounds in place or a guard to cameras with face capture and heat scanning features that will flood your lawn with bright LEDs if they see a human face. It all exists although we can’t speak to its reliability or degree of annoyance your neighbouring houses or stores are willing to put up with.
One thing that is overlooked though as homeowners and business owners alike splurge on an alarm system or camera is that criminals are smarter than a box. They can avoid or cut electricity and the high-tech ten thousand dollar camera can do nothing about it. Security is one of the industries that can’t be purely automated. Giving robots weapons and the power to detain or hurt human beings is not a good idea. At least until we can program them with a moral compass and critical thinking skills (which isn’t likely to happen).
Technology doesn’t have to be taboo of course. There is a lot of instances where having something like a system of cameras and automation can make security guards job a lot easier. Freeing up time from easily repeatable actions for them to observe and make the decisions robots can’t.
For example, having a guard overseeing a keycard scanning booth for access to a building or business. 99% of these scans are going to be for perfectly normal admittances, just a regular day for an employee. But that 1% of the time when a robot would see nothing wrong a security guard would be alerted to signals that something isn’t quite right. A sweaty forehead and avoiding eye contact… a guard would spot it instantly but a camera wouldn’t get that detail or even know what to do with it. It could be the difference between a fatal event or not.
Security guards also get to know the regulars, they know who needs extra precaution and can clear their identity before letting a stranger who got a company ID off the bus stop into your place of work.
Security guards aren’t just for business though. Homes and neighbourhoods are where families should feel safe, but break-ins and property damage is getting more common with fewer people out at night. Experienced burglars can enter and find the more valuable items in less than 8 minutes now and with social media it is easy to find out when people aren’t home.
The criminals are getting stronger, faster, and better at carrying out small crimes like B and Es and Petty Theft but those labels disguise the billions of dollar costs these crimes actually cost the American People every year.
